"Rebel in Chief"

March 28, 2006

I heard the interview with Fred Barnes on freshair today. It didn’t sound like the book was interesting at all, BUT he threw out a pretty interesting notion: If Dick Cheney resigns, then Condoleeza Rice could be moved into the V.P. slot in preparation for her to run for president in 2008. He was suggesting this as a method for Bush to “change the subject” in Washington, and anoint his successor.

It occurred to me that that could lead to a very interesting race between Rice (a black woman republican) and Hillary Clinton (a white woman democrat). Wouldn’t that be a scream?

I’ve watched 2 episodes of Libery! The American Revolution. I’m sure that such a race would have been completely incomprehensible to our founding fathers. I wonder what Thomas Paine would have thought…

Macintosh USB Keyboards

March 5, 2006

This is a great thread on keyboards for macs.

I can’t really find any good info on this keyboard either, but it looks/sounds very interesting.

the right keyboard?

March 4, 2006

Maybe this is the right keyboard for me. I want small form factor so the mouse is not far away. (I do like having a numeric keypad, but I can get by without one.)

This keyboard claims to have very good tactile feedback. Check out this page and there was another page that was research from IBM on keyboards, but I can’t find it now.

Follow up: I ordered one. I’ll find out if it’s The Right Keyboard.

gotta new keyboard

March 4, 2006

I’m still deciding if I like it or not. Definitely it looks cool, but I don’t know about the typing on it.

It doesn’t really have the tactile feedback that I was expecting. It’s very much like the MicroConnector keyboard I had a while back. (I don’t think they’re made anymore.) It’s noisy if you type hard on it, but there is no feel for when the key has “made contact”. If I press slowly on a key, at some point in the middle the letter appears. It’s not too bad to type on, but what I wanted was something that is great to type on.

For those considering this keyboard for macintosh use, here’s the plan: Go to “keyboard and mouse” in system prefs. On the keyboard tab/screen there is a “modifier keys…” button. Go there. Tell it to use caps lock for control (so that will put control key in The Right Place), and then make the control key be a command key. This way you get 2 command keys on opposite corners of the keyboard, and the control key is fixed. The problem is that you no longer have a caps lock. Bummer.

Update:

I very reluctantly sent the keyboard back. I really, really liked it. But the keyboard really didn’t have the tactile feedback I was looking for. But oh man, it was nice. I just couldn’t type on it too long.

tactile pro review

March 3, 2006

I was hunting around for the “micro connectors” keyboard that I bought a while back on a recommendation from Alex. I ended up getting rid of it because it wasn’t perfect. So while searching for that (I couldn’t even remember the name “micro connectors” and I’m still not sure that’s correct), I found this article that talks about that one and the “tactile pro” which I’ve been interested in as well.
